Last flight together
Towards the end of May 1972, had the famous and little known howl of the J-79 engines of the F-104G that sounded as an owl.
After taking part on the Victory parade and knowing that this was the last time that they would participate and also that it would be the last time flying together all of the F-104’s, once on the ground and forming a group at the head of runway 05, all the pilots decided, without a previous accord, to return to the parking area of the Squadron in closed formation rolling on the street used for taxing. (Parallel to the runway).
Without a warning, one of the pilots gave full power to his engine, cut it and braked, then all of them in succession followed. The tremendous howling was the heard.
This maneuver brought punishment to the brakes and several blown tires, to the point were on one of the F-104G, one of the tires caught fire and the pilot had to be rescued by pulling him out of the cockpit by a member of the rescue team that was at the foot of the runway.
This was the farewell that F-104G’s gave to the Torrejon Air Base.
