Loss of oil and problems with the nozzles
The 25 of June 1968, in an instruction flight to train a pilot to be a flight instructor for the future pilots that would be assigned to the Squadron, in the dual control, they had a grave incident, the kind that none of the pilots like to have, the loss of engine oil, with consequence of loss of power for the non-actuation of the nozzles, which remained in the open position and left the airplane without enough thrust to remain up in the air.
After carrying out and inverted flight for a distance over the Lake of Alarcon, the famous pendulum to air the oil deposit, did not move and all the oil in the deposit was spilled over the ventilation system, as it was found after investigation by Mantenance.
The problem was that the exhaust gasses variable grille (nozzles) was fully opened without a possibility of closing it, a position that would be in when there was a loss of pressure for lack of oil. A modification, which had not yet been incorporated, would allow the closing of the Nozzles mechanically and retain sufficient thrust to return to the field.
In this situation, they went with the afterburner fully on and were able to land even with minimum power from the engine under those conditions and with only on chance to land, without possibility of engine or air.
They managed to get the airplane on the runway leaking oil all over the place and when they left the runway, the firemen looked at them as nothing had happened but when they stopped the airplane and came down from the cockpit, the pilots could not stand up for a while from the scare that they had inside.
