A flying bicycle is worth more than Mach 2 on the ground
Well known was the friendly pique the different Squadrons of the Spanish Air Force. Above all, the F-104G Squadron, because it was the pretty boy, since it was the most modern and with the highest technology and boasting of their powerful airplane.
But the Squadron had to pay back for being the most modern, it would pass a period in which not enough hours were flown (already mentioned). At that time, the Operations Chief, explained this way:
“It was very hard that a modern Squadron, with a magnificent airplane
and the people wishing like crazy to fly, could not fly hours and
the worst part was to have the pilots stopped and with nothing to do
all day without missions for programming."
In this situation and in the eve of the victory parade, the F-5 pilots from Talavera that would come to participate in the parade, they would pass a pair of days sharing the Squadron’s installations and they reflected in the following manner:
“The pilots of the F-104G used to continuously say that, for them, the F-5 was like a bicycle,
compared to the powerful Starfighter”.
So, on this occasion when they arrived at Squadron building where the pilots would get together before and after the parade, Captains Rubio and Valero, (pilots of the F-5’s) were hiding a sign that they had brought from Talavera and they opened when they reached the reunion, as an answer to the absurd presumption and in which one could read:
“A FLYING BICYCLE IS WORTH MORE THAN MACH 2 ON THE GROUND"
It was well remembered and assumed by the F-104G pilots that would take as friendly knock.
