In 1942 Christopher Columbus spent some days in Gando Bay in his America's Discovery Trip. The first landing of an aircraft in Gando was in 1924, and in 1940 it was established as an air force base with permanent units.

The base has
3.500.000 m2, within 19 kms. perimeter, and 78 buildings. There are four
runways 10.000 feet long (two main and two taxiways, operatives as well). Gando AFB has
active and pasive defense systems, including fighter aircraft shelters, and high security
facilities, so probably it is the air base with lowest vulnerability in NATO south sector.
